Deceased Name: SALLY S. KROVITZ

Sally S. Krovitz, passed away Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, in Sacramento, Calif.

She was born in Brimson and later moved to Duluth. Sally was a graduate of Central High School and Duluth State Teachers College and was a former elementary school teacher. She married Abe Krovitz, owner of the Cash and Carry Market in West Duluth from 1939 to 1969, in 1933.

Sally had an impressive record of service in youth, civic and educational organizations on the local, state and national level. She was president of the former Temple Emanuel Sisterhood from 1949 to 1951, vice president of Mid-Western Federation of Temple Sisterhoods (five states) from 1961 to 1964, secretary for Temple Emanuel Board of Directors, board member for several years on the Jewish Community Relations Committee, The Duluth Round Table, National Conference of Christians and Jews, Jewish Social Service Agency, and The Duluth Women's Institute, where she served on the executive board.

She was a member of the first board of the newly established Jewish Community Center in Duluth, chairwoman of the Religious School Committee, also a youth group adviser and adult education chairwoman, and she served over 15 years on the board and in several offices of the Duluth Section National Council of Jewish Women, serving as book review chairman. Sally was a Girl Scout leader at Chester Park School from 1942 to 1946 and later served on the Girl Scout council as a director.

She was president of Chester Park PTA from 1944 to 1946, an elected member of the Duluth Board of Education, serving as its chairwoman of schools committee and as its representative on the Duluth Teachers' Retirement Board from 1953 to 1959. She was a delegate to the White House Conference on Education, president of the Duluth Council of Parent Teacher Associations from 1951 to 1953, executive board of East High PTA and Central High PTA, board member of Minnesota Congress of Parents and Teachers for eight years, serving on speakers bureau and as monthly newsletter editor. She was awarded a life membership in the Minnesota Congress of Parents and Teachers.

She served as Duluth chairwoman for the election of John F. Kennedy and attended his presidential inauguration. Sally was chairwoman of the Duluth Day Luncheon in 1955. She was one of the six members of the James Wright Hunt Scholarship Committee from 1960 to 1972, a member of the Duluth Women's Institute since its inception, serving on the arts and education, and civic committee, YWCA resident committee, and Governor Freeman's statewide committee for physical fitness. She served and organized the Duluth citizens committee for educational television. Sally was a board member of the Chisholm Museum and was on the board of directors of the library committee.

Sally and Abe moved to Sun City, Ariz., in 1972, after Abe's retirement. Sally continued her community involvement. She was past vice president of Beth Shalom Sisterhood, past member of the board of directors of Temple Beth Shalom, where she also served as religious practices chairwoman and on the pulpit and nominating committee. She was a national board member of A.R.Z.A. (Association of Reform Zionists of America), founder, chairwoman of Temple Beth Shalom's A.R.Z.A. chapter in Sun City. Sally and Abe were delegates, representing the congregation at the national assembly of A.R.Z.A. in Los Angeles in October 1984.

They were also delegates at the international conference of the world union for progressive Judaism in Jerusalem in June 1983. Sally also served as a board member on the League of Women Voters of Sun City, serving as legislative chair.

While Sally's volunteer accomplishments are impressive, she remained modest. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who always put her family first.

She will be sadly missed by her beloved husband of 66 years, Abe Krovitz; her daughter, Marilyn Krovitz (Larry) Blunt of Sacramento, Calif.; her son, Robert ''Buzzy'' (Shelley) Krovitz of Aurora, Colo.; grandchildren Gail, Matthew and David Krovitz of Aurora, and Kirk Lange of Sacramento; and great-grandchildren Carolyn and Aaron Lange. She will be truly missed by relatives and friends.
